Youth String Ensembles

The VSO School Youth String Ensembles play a variety of music, including specialized arrangements tailored to fit each group’s level, join together for selected pieces and collaborate with outside groups. Each ensemble meets weekly and is a full year course. Students accepted mid-year will be given a pro-rated fee. Members are expected to attend all rehearsals and performances.

2017-18 Youth Orchestra & String Ensemble Hearings
Participation in the VSOSoM's Sinfonietta, Intermezzo and Preludio ensembles is by audition, and placement hearings for next school year's ensembles take place in May and June. For the first time, Sinfonietta will also be open to selected Woodwind, Brass and Percussion players to join the ensemble for the second half of their rehearsal, from 2-3pm on Saturdays.

What to Prepare
1) Two excerpts of materials you have been working on lately
2) Major and minor scales of your choice
The audition / audition video will last approximately 8-10mins.

Please note that the final decision on the most appropriate ensemble will be made by the Program Director.

2016-17 Youth String Ensembles

String Ensemble Retreat Weekend – April 28-30, 2017 (Fri – Sun).
All Youth String Ensemble members take part in a special overnight weekend in a superb retreat facility in Chilliwack, to make music and deepen friendships in a fun-filled weekend of rehearsals, classes, games and activities (attendance fee includes cabin-style accommodation and meals). All string ensemble members will be automatically enrolled in the string retreat activity for an additional fee of $230, payable in three installments.

Dates: Saturdays (see individual ensemble for time). Full year course:

PRELUDIO STRINGS (Beginning Players)
Instructor: Bo Peng
Recommended for: Young violinists, violists, cellists and string bassists ages 6-12yrs, Suzuki bk. 2-3 / RCM 2-3 / Colourstrings lessons after 2 years
Times: Saturdays, 10.30–11.30am. Full year course.
Fee: Students accepted to begin mid-year will be offered a prorated fee.
For students taking private VSOSoM Lessons: $485 for the year
Stand-alone: $550 for the year (payable in installments)

Welcoming beginning players to the school's strings ensembles family, Preludio Strings are featured in concerts, join other groups in performances and participate at the Camp Charis String Retreat.
INTERMEZZO STRINGS (Intermediate Players)
Instructor: Carla Birston
Recommended for: Young violinists, violists, cellists and string bassists ages 6-12yrs, Suzuki bk. 4-7 / RCM 4-6.
Times: Saturdays, 11.45am-12.45pm. Full year course.
Fee: Students accepted to begin mid-year will be offered a prorated fee.
For students taking private VSOSoM Lessons: $495 for the year
Stand-alone: $550 for the year (payable in installments)

The intermediate strings group tackles chellenging and fun repertoire, including classical masterworks, film scores, and special arrangements written specifically for them!
SINFONIETTA STRINGS (Advanced Players)
Instructor: Carla Birston
Recommended for: Violinists, violists, cellists and string bassists ages 12-18yrs, Suzuki bk. 4+ / RCM 7+
Times: Saturdays, 1.00–3.00pm. Full year course.
Fee: Students accepted to begin mid-year will be offered a prorated fee.
For students taking private VSOSoM Lessons: $495 for the year
Stand-alone: $595 for the year (payable in installments)

The advanced group has special opportunities to perform in VSO pre-concert appearances and side-by-side concerts with the VSO;  works with selected VSO guest artists and players; and collaborates with other VSOSoM ensembles and student soloists.  The group performs approx. 5-8 concerts annually, including community concerts outside the school.  Members are expected to attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances.
